Scotch Egg Challenge

Monday 20th June 2022 In partnership with Estrella Damm

A star-studded line-up of acclaimed chefs, with Michelin stars and Masterchef appearances between them, are due to compete in the annual Guinea Grill Scotch Egg Challenge in partnership with Estrella Damm.

On the 20th June 2022, The Dorchester’s Tom Booton and double Michelin star winning James Knappet will be among those going head-to-head in the competition to create the perfect scotch egg.

The popular event usually takes place every year but has been on hiatus during the pandemic. Now, we are excited to welcome you all back to try the creations by some of the country’s finest cooks. Expect sumptuous takes on the traditional, as well as some slightly quirky and off the wall interpretations of the egg.

Founded and hosted by Oisín Rogers, general manager of Young’s The Guinea Grill, Scotch Egg Challenge has established itself as one of the most popular and anticipated competitions in the hospitality industry. Previous winners include The Drapers Arms, Holborn Dining Room and Smoking Goat.

Confirmed competitors include Masterchef’s Sally Abe and Natalie Coleman head chef at Oyster Shed, acclaimed author and restaurateur Ben Tish, award-winning chef at the French House Soho Neil Borthwick, Britain’s most famous pie maker Calum Franklin and Jamie Shears, who is about to start at hotly anticipated new Mayfair pub the Audley, along with Matt Sullivan group executive chef on Young’s Pubs & Hotels.

The Scotch Egg Challenge is free to attend, but subject to capacity. It will be compered by journalist and Maitre d’ Joe Warwick, and the Evening Standard’s David Ellis, and judged by a glittering line-up of culinary experts.

“I can’t wait to welcome everyone back to the Guinea to take part in the Scotch Egg Challenge,” said Oisin Rogers, our General Manager here at the Guinea Grill.

“It’s been amazing seeing all our customers enjoy special events again, and now it’s finally time to host one of our biggest parties of the year. It is going to be a lot of fun – come one, come all and bring a huge appetite.”

Traditionally,  the winner of The Scotch Egg Challenge 2021 will be decided by a panel of rigorous expert judges, including Bob Granleese, Stefan Chomka and Lisa Markwell. The judges blind-taste every egg, scoring each out of ten for taste, appearance and presentation with the highest-scoring egg overall being victorious.

Guest of honour judge this year will be Darragh Curran. the Guinness Guru, who will fly in from Dublin for the event.

No ticket or booking is required for the Scotch Egg Challenge, we’d encourage early arrival as we are expecting to be extremely busy.
